Did you ever wonder why saints and monks and nuns renounce pleasure and money? It is not only because they want a stricter and more disciplined way of life. They are really renouncing pain. Pain and pleasure go hand in hand, as opposite sides of a coin. If there was a way to give up pain and just achieve pleasure, even the saints would probably do that.
It is just like a door where one side says “push” and the other side says “pull”. “Pleasure is on one side of the door, and “Pull” is on the other side of the door. They swing together. Tell me of one instance where this was not true in your life.
The saints were not idiots. They knew that with pleasure, came the accompanying pain. With more money, came more problems. To achieve any lasting peace, you have to give up all that the world cherishes. Nature is a just entity. You cannot have 80% pleasure and 20% pain. It is 50/50. With your love for money, there will be the resulting pain that you will endure with the acquisition of money.
With your obsession with your appearance, it is also 50/50. You may cherish your good looks in your youth, but as your skin begins to sag, society will shun your appearance. If you happen to live in a society where physical beauty is NOT cherished, then you will doubtless not experience the suffering when your face wrinkles and ages. But then…you will not have experienced the joy and pleasure of seeing a youthful face in your early days.
If you seek after money, quite possibly you will amass a lot of it. But then, inevitably, you will lose it, again and again. After each time, you will suffer. Then you will, like the myth of Sissyphus, continue rolling that ball up the mountain. You will continue to try to accumulate wealth. Probably you will amass wealth again, and find pleasure in it. But later, with 100% certainty, you will lose it, and feel the pain all over again.
The way out is to not seek after money and beauty in the first place. Where you give your life’s importance, there will be your suffering also. The duality of this world, will never be breached.
