I could otherwise call these “Late Night Infomercials and Businesses You Can Start in Your Garage” Category.
Now that I have hopefully convinced you that you should not rush out and revamp your resume and enter serfdom with a “job”, be careful in how you choose to start one. It will take a little time, there is no doubt about it. You need to plan and explore your passions, being realistic in your sales targets.
As Warren Buffet wrote, “You can’t create nine babies after a month by getting nine women pregnant.” All of these will take time. Be wary of “turn-key businesses” that you see on cable TV and in magazines and the like. It really makes me laugh…those late night commercials and books that try to sell you on starting your business with $9.99 and here’s hoping that it reaches Apple Computer Co. status. As if… The unscrupulous shows and tells and showcases Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. promising how you should quit your job and tell your boss to shove it and open your own business with THEIR program selling things prepackaged like vitamins and or trinkets for $20.00 that you can buy at your local Dollar store for…guess what? One dollar.
They have these late night infomercials that showcase these “paid for” actors that say that if you send them $69.95, they will show you the path to untold billions. On one of these infomercials, I saw someone I consider an unscrupulous salesman, Donald Trump, with his “Trump University” real estate program. Unlucky people shelled out up to tens of thousands of dollars to be “trained” not by Donald Trump himself but rather a paid associate. All of that information I read could be had for free on the Internet. His program advertisement had participants who were shouting how they were going to become “billionaires” in short order. Please be aware of the borderline criminal ads that try to sell you a prepacked turn-key business requiring no effort on your own except a $50-$100 (investment).
The path to freedom will entail more care and attention than that. You must be realistic and not fall for the “easy” money. Your passion and enthusiasm will carry you there. Just kicking back and paying someone $50 dollars and hoping a six figure income stream develops without any of your own effort… well sigh. Please don’t…
There is no such thing. I wrote that running your own “profit centers” will likely not earn you a “billion” dollars as those late night cable ads shows but rather a source of income that frees your time to do things you really want. You must be very careful. Especially those plentiful “vitamin” selling businesses…Just to let you know, no customers you are going to get are going to pay you $100.00 a month for vitamins that cost $8.88 at your local Walmart store and it is a year’s supply. And no…I don’t believe most Americans will buy the sales pitch that a “vitamin pill” will simultaneously cure cancer, diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolism, and whooping cough in one easy dose. Beware of these unethical sharks.
One such ad promised to train you to sell common household items found anywhere and somehow “guaranteed” success with a small storefront that could beat the pants off of Walmart. You have to be wise. No, you cannot liquidate your Roth IRA and with $5000.00 rent a 1500 sq ft. storefront, sell some groceries and household items and compete with your local Walmart store that cost $20 Billion dollars to build, fund, and maintain especially if they are within driving distance. The way you are going to compete with the likes of Walmart will be in the area of service and by targeting a “niche” market. Going head to head against a large corporation playing their same game is a sure fire way to disappointment and gasp…back to a regular “job”.
