As a side note, consider how Society says being a rich banker, a medical doctor or lawyer will make you so happy? The statistics do not hold up here either. These professions have a higher rate of suicide, substance abuse, and unhappiness than the average population!
To be happy, basically you must turn your back on all that Society holds dear. Sure chasing after and briefly gaining in money, fame, and power will bring some positive feeling for a very brief moment. But that feeling is NOT to be confused with equanimity, peace, love, kindness, compassion, happiness, and bliss. Rather, it is a short storm of childlike restlessness you confuse with happiness that will only succeed in maintaining a positive feeling for a short while, if you even achieve it at all.
EVERYTHING (with caps) that Society tries to sell you on will disturb your inner soul and lead you away from the path of equanimity, happiness and bliss. Everything Society values will add more attachments to your life that the winds of fortune will break…and following that your own equanimity, peace, and happiness. All that is really precious will be lost.
Keeping these facts in mind will be the first launching steps to keeping your mind still and even.
A funny example of my own, when I was the most unconscious in my life, was when I thought having a fancy sports car will bring me happiness. Sure once or twice someone would holler at me, “Hey, nice car!” (and I felt good about that at the time), but that sports car, a Porsche 928, gave me more misery than I can even begin to describe. All the while I was worried when I parked it at night if someone would steal it or scratch it.
The maintenance of the car was so high I had to have two jobs just to keep it in proper repair. The car insurance was that of five cars. When a new scratch or rust spot developed, I felt it was the end of the world. How unsettled I was! As an aside, I recall the air filter cost 115 dollars alone, while the normal air filter for a car was just about 3 dollars and fifty cents. It was an absolute nightmare, and getting rid of it felt like my getting my freedom back after a five year prison term at Alcatraz prison island….
Be still, be mindful, and detach yourself from what Society has taught you… and then allow light to shine through to you. The more attachments you have to this world, what Society has tricked you into believing, will bring you increased suffering. That I can state with absolute certainty.
