For the past many years, I have held a few relatively stress free part time jobs, here and there, and hustled for many of my days. In so doing, I was able to free up the most important aspect of my life, my freedom and time to do that which I really wanted to do (like writing this book/blog) and sharing my experiences with my beloved fellow man/woman (YOU).
In the couple of years, I have hustled by doing so many little things. Anything from occasional yard work, teaching privately biology, physics, chemistry, buying things at yard sales and rummage sales and reselling them on Craigslist.org, helping to cater a “wake” for a deceased person, advising and consulting people about finances (I hold a Series 7 license), being a driver for someone to and from work who cannot drive for various reasons. A few times I bought in bulk cigarettes which I resold for a profit from a Russian friend of mine. Writing articles on the Internet. The list goes on.
If you sit down and write down all your talents, you would be amazed at what you have to give to the world, and what the world will pay you for. If you are to achieve any lasting peace and equanimity in your life, you must have adequate free time for yourself to be creative and leave you with enough energy to follow through on your creative endeavors.
As we mentioned, a typical 9 to 5 job cannot possibly give you satisfaction. For a typical 9 to 5 job, you have to get up at 8:00 am, shower and put on makeup (if you are female), choose and don clothing, do your hair, prepare a breakfast and lunch, get in your car and commute the long distance (half an hour on average), work, and then make the long drive home in congested traffic. You likely will have to bring home a lot of work that you could not get to finish. Is it any wonder that you will have no time for yourself at the end of the day? After you unwind, eat dinner, it will be bedtime.
No wonder why everyone cries out in unison “TGIF”, “Thank God Its Friday”, as the end of the workweek approaches. You are busy to the bone all week, and then rush too fill your free moments on the weekend. After being so busy during the week, you are rush to squeeze in the precious moments of free time you have on Saturday and Sunday. During the workweek, you endured so much injustices and mindless work that is based on pure repetition that makes money for a soulless company. And then you wonder why half of America is on antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, anti-hypertensive drugs, and sleep medications?
Really think hard about all the skills you have to offer the world. Then start a plan of escape from the corporate ladder climbing race that is only intertwined with frustration and suffering. Much of what that strategy entailed is to limit your living expenses down to nearly zero. It can be done. We discussed in detail how it can be done. And it is not at all how hard you may think it is. It is all in your state of mind. If you say you cannot live without the $200.00 wine tasting club fees per week, the manicures, pedicures, the massages, the cocktail steak dinners, etc. then yes, the transition to freedom will be very difficult. But if you allow your mind to be accepting of what can be possible, you can make the jump to be “joyfully job free”.
Don’t wait thirty more years of layoffs, soul crushing mindless work, office drama, impossible deadlines… then given your “gold watch” as you ready yourself for retirement in your mid to late sixties. By then your body is so worn out and tired, and your mind is also so worn out, all you will want to do is sit down on that chair in front of the TV and collapse. All that time you could have spent LIVING will have been wasted because all your sights were in the wrong direction. As they say, when you are ever on the side of the majority, it is time for a needed checkup and addressing of your condition.
