Something once heard, “My husband is on a new diet. He loses about ten pounds a week. In a couple of months, I’ll be rid of him completely.”
A husband asked his wife, “Will you still love me if I look old, fat, and ugly?” She answered with a grin, “Yes, I do.”
In our modern day, appearances seem at times to be everything and mean everything to others. Try as you might, you will never be able to change your form into what society deems ideal. I read about a scientist who wrote that the Barbie Doll which young girls buy and cherish is so far removed from reality that it damages girls’ self esteem from the very start. And somehow we as a society have allowed this to happen!
The scientist wrote that if “Barbie” was real, she would have to be at least 9 feet tall (based on an estimation as a function of arm and leg length), and have a six neck, a nose so tiny that air inhalation would be next to impossible, among other things. We as a society have poisoned our youth, in the above case focused on our young daughters. It is really a form of child abuse actually. The makers of Barbie have finally slowly taken note of this.
A few years ago, I saw a TV show where an African American mother asked her daughter which would you rather play with, and there was an African American “Dark Skinned” Barbie, and the White Barbie. To her disappointment and shock, her daughter picked up the white Barbie…because that is what is paraded around her daughter at school, at friends’ homes, etc.
And then the child abuse turns to adult abuse. Women are expected to look like a 20 year old all of their lives…especially in Western Society. I was shocked when I visited my local Walmart Superstore that two entire aisles appeared to be devoted to hair coloring alone! Walking along the row of ladies clothing, I saw a series of ‘corset like” bands that women would wear to make their waists and thighs thinner…thereby also making it hard to breathe.
The demands made on men are really no different. Even night it seems I see an ad for “Hair Club for Men” or something to make men look at stay and feeling young. I see advertisements at night for men’s sporting gear and things like adlflex, boflex, and exercise machines to make their muscles bulge. What why is this? Men in modern day society have literally no need to exert physical prowess at anyone, lest they get arrests for battery. They have no need to wrestle a bear or wildcat. But yet Society asks men to look young if they are balding, and to maintain a physical appearance equal to when they were in high school. Utterly ridiculous. Society wins again at making the individual unsettled and depressed.
