A University of Pennsylvania researcher Martin Seligman said depression is a new plague among young middle age Americans. The reason behind this is epidemic hopelessness. The root cause of this is Individualism. With individualism, there is always a give and take. Individuals DO enjoy independence and take pride in achievements, but it exacts a heavy price for the soul. That is because self-driven individuals take personal responsibility for their failures as well as their successes. It can be very lonely and depressing when you take on personal responsibility for every event that happens to you.
If you are part of a community, and the entire community is close and works together, there is a keen advantage to that. If the endeavor is a failure, there is not one single person who takes all the blame for it, since everyone is working together on the project. This displacement of job responsibility, doing things as a community, will address a great deal of personal failures and the loneliness that is associated with such work.
