But many engage in activities that “seem” to work but backfire in the longer run. I have already discussed drinking and drugs (illicit) before. Drinking does dull the awareness and the mind, but there are serious side effects and long term health hazards. There is smoking, which may work, but will cause your lungs to turn black and cause hundreds of kinds of cancers. Of course a drug like cocaine will work, but the effect is so temporary, and your downswing in your mood will equal the upmood you felt and you end up below where you started, meaning you will end up even more depressed after your “run” on cocaine is over.
In addition, the engagement of illicit drugs brings so many other events which will make you more depressed than your original solution. For example, you may be feeling a bit glum at any moment of the day, and say you go into the employee bathroom into a stall and sniff just a little bit of cocaine. You come out and your negative thoughts do disappear, but of course the downside will arrive just a few minutes after your “high” disappears. And one day, and surely that day will come, you will be caught with the cocaine at work, and then how do you think your mood will turn when you are escorted out of the office in handcuffs with all your fellow employees looking on and someone carrying your personal office box to the squad car waiting below?
And even if you avoid jail time and your family is able to pay a hefty fine to the state and pay the lawyer’s bills, just try and get a job with a drug conviction on your record. It won’t happen.
We now know what that will bring—if you choose unwisely a solution to your mind’s trampling. And engaging in dangerous solutions to attempt to regain peace in your mind will certainly end in tears in the long run. As we mentioned about alcohol, if you routinely imbibe in it, you will get into trouble with the law too. That is a “for sure” scenario. How will you feel about a DUI? And then getting the arrest record, conviction, and having to walk to work as your license is revoked will bring bigger tears. And how will you feel if you hurt someone while driving under the influence?
Many have admitted to “comfort eating” as a solution. They will open the refrigerator and start munching on unhealthy things and thus gain a lot of weight. This will cause more problems. What about Hypertension, Hypercholesterolism, and Diabetes? Therefore we can conclude that “comfort eating” is another inappropriate solution to the problem of your mind running astray. So don’t replace one problem with another more serious problem.
Perhaps if you are sitting on the Titanic ship and it is sinking and you have only a few minutes to live, then drinking and doing drugs may work, and can be an effective solution. But that is such an unlikely scenario. It is an impossible scenario. You will face a tomorrow. Keep that in mind as you search for healthy solutions when your mind derails.
