Society is great at instilling a longing into your soul. Feelings of desire, striving, grasping, fantasizing, and longing are all programmed into you with all their advertisements and stories. Your fantasies grow as you grow in years, and build up a foundation that must by its very weight crumble.
For advertisements in the Army, the societal slogan, “Be all that you can be in the Army,” are pictured by strong men jumping out of a soaring helicopter. They make it seem so exciting and wonderful. Another advertisement shows people dreaming and playing the local state lottery. They cite all your fantasies about money problems disappearing as they show excited people winning and living a wonderful life. But as statistics show, winning the lottery paradoxically increases your chances of declaring bankruptcy. Never mind the infinitesimally small chances of your even winning.
If and when you seek after peak experiences, then your relative present moments and accomplishments will pale in comparison to your past accomplishments on a regular basis. Once again, if you had and strove for “peak” experiences like being famous and having a lot of money, including wooing and sleeping with a very attractive member of the opposite sex, and if you achieved them, then your life at the present moment will seem boring and unfulfilling.
If you listen to society and continue to strive for more money and more achievements, you are only doing society’s bidding. As we discussed, “Society” is alive all on its own. It is called a Gestalt. The sum is actually different and more than all of its parts. Great Society needs obedience and slaves and people to work hard to build its bridges, roads, building, and continue industry and scientific advancements. Thus it instills in people all the necessary ingredients to create longing, striving, desire, lust, and envy and jealousy, only to denounce them later. It is all very ironic and all very wrong.
It is a terrible circle of affliction and a kind of torture society does to its citizens. But it is one that if somebody becomes aware of it and endeavors to rise above it, and takes the logical steps to overcome it, they will experience freedom from it. It may not come all at once because you were programmed in such a way for so many years, starting from your own parents who were likely similarly programmed. They pass that poison onto you. It is like a terrible addiction to a drug that you must break in order to find freedom.
