Are you suffering today? Are you suffering at this very moment? Then you must be very attached today. Be aware of the following paradox. When you are grasping, you cannot grasp only the pleasure. You must know you are grasping BOTH the pleasure AND the pain. It is really a simple concept, but it is a difficult one to really wrap your head around. It takes real love and devotion and meditation to grasp this fact of life. Remember that “suffering” is directly proportional to “attachment”.
So be compassionate when you start to awaken because at the core, know that most people you encounter are afraid. Life will wear you down though with your capacity for suffering. Let go of it. Remember too that self-acceptance and forgiveness is also part of letting go. As you breathe, try this exercise to understand pain and pleasure. Breathing in pain, and then breathing out pleasure, or vice versa.
There really is no higher happiness than being at peace with the world and your circumstances. Cross the world in your empty boat, then no one will seek to hurt you. If your empty boat collides with an angry man, if you are not in the boat, he cannot get angry. He will just shrug and ignore your empty boat entirely. But if there is your “self” in the boat, he will be angry at you and shout and curse. Then, you too will become unsettled.
