Remember that personal tragedy carries with it a tremendous opportunity for growth if you are mindful of the oneness you have with others. When you are miserable, you have an incredible opportunity to think about what the root cause is. But you cannot simply remove the feelings of misery without putting the ego down too.
Everything in modern Society is made from the notion of accumulation, gathering, achieving, and obeying. So when there is a great tragedy, perceive it for what it really is—an opportunity for the ego to be dissolved. It is precisely here that the ego can be dissolved, and it is the death of the ego that allows for the birth of your soul. In other ancient cultures, the elderly were respected, revered. Now today, in modern society, the elderly are seen are useless. Why is this? Our society has superficial priorities.
If you are young and successful, don’t brag about it. It is so ugly. Look at the enlightened people for proof. They all don’t care what people think of them. If you can get up and go to work and you spill coffee on your shirt as you enter your place of work, and if you absolutely do not care what your co-workers think of you that your shirt is brown with coffee, and don’t really even notice it yourself, then you know you are entering the realm of enlightenment. Notice how much your ego reacts in this situation. Hopefully, you would have grown to the point where your ego is so small it is not bothered.
