Consider the fact that you ego IS never in the present. It is always in the past and the future. When you bring your ego to the present, you are destroying your present as well. For the ego, there are two ways of being unhappy. 1) Getting what you want and 2) Not getting what you want. Non-resistance is the key to the most important way to bring lasting peace in your heart and mind. The ego puts in resistance everywhere it goes. Then, the soul is freed from the world and the cage of “form”.
When I rounded on patients in the hospital in a previous job, I would ask questions to the patients as they lay dying as death approached. All of them shined with a radiance as they let go of all their attachments. And with the loss of their attachments to this world, their ego was also released.
I was reminded of a patient at the St. Francis Hospital facing death. Even as he lay dying and continued to get worse, he smiled more and more often. Even as I followed his over the course of 12 weeks, his enthusiasm for life never wavered but rather grew. His bodily functions deteriorated to the point where he could not use the rest room at all. His manure had continued to accumulate to the point where he had to go into surgery where the GI doctor had to scoop out his manure from his bowels. And then the peripheral arteries eroded and infection set in so he had to have his legs amputated. As I saw the staples in his nearly gone legs, I felt such pity for him. But that pity was misplaced. He did not feel the negativity.
But that pity was only my personal reaction judging him at the time. He did not feel any sorrow. He enjoyed every moment of his existence. Even his hospital meals, which I considered so unappetizing, he ate with glee. He would reflect to me how he felt life was just a dream, Dying was like slowly awakening from a series of occurrence that WAS a dream to him. The events in his life were formed by his attachments to his ego. As he lay dying, it was his ego was dying too. And then who he really was just shined forward. It was like changing the channels of consciousness. Life was all just like a ride in an amusement park that he was about to exit from.
The roller coaster was slowly slowing down, and he was about to get off. Maybe the real purpose of life is for the soul to gain lessons and awaken within the dream. As Edgar Allen Poe said, “Life is but a dream within a dream”.
