Climbing various ladders of ambition sets up the stage of being unable to make decisions autonomously because more and more people are involved. For example, an Amish medical doctor need not deal with oceans of paperwork and oversight by insurance companies and the government. The absence of titillating images negates the occurrence of fantasizes, which are seeds of discontent for a typical Amish male.
As a personal example, when I was young, I did not care about the appearance of the opposite sex. If they were kind and nice to me, they were attractive physically from MY point of view. But after watching so many artificial images of bleach blond Barbie doll women with fake tans and fake breasts, my tastes became a victim of the main stream media. And now I tend to fancy such superficial images on occasion.
The deficiency of real goals and the deficiency of autonomy makes the modern man feeling powerless, and thus miserable. Another example is say a bridge builder in ancient times. The relative ease and success of building such a bridge would be in Category 2, very achievable with no government regulations and no real timeline. Contrast that with a modern “bridge builder” who must navigate pages and pages of laws on how the bridge should be built and… modern bridges are usually much more complicated and grow ever more so with time. The most recent one I read was in China and is longer than a marathon (26.43 miles)! Image the stress the team of bridge builders had to face and the deadlines and timelines they endured!
You may think that a primitive man is less secure because of a shorter relative lifespan. But a long life does not mean a happy one. Know that physical security is far different from psychological security. The semblance of control is apparent and tangible for the primitive man. For instance, a primitive man, if faced with fighting a bear or boar for food, CAN fight back. He is by no means facing an impossible situation. But consider the plight of a modern man needing to feed his family. If he is laid off from work due to no fault of his own, or due to the economy, due to natural disasters, a nuclear disaster as what happened in Japan in 2011, strips away all his powers and sense of control. What can he do if a CEO he never met lays him off and he has no money. Last I checked, there are no wild animals like boars of cattle roaming the country that he can hunt and then consume.
It is true though that primitive man is powerless in the face of certain diseases that could be cured by the modern science like antibiotics. But he accepts that with stoicism. For him, it is the nature of things. But modern man cries out against nature and fights and fights to live longer and is dependent on modern society yet again. Modern man has things IMPOSED on him, and he cannot influence the persons and the outcome. Consequently, he feels humiliated, frustrated, and angry…emotions foreign to the primitive man or to the Amish.
