If a negative thought arises, don’t fight it. Just watch it and let it pass. Negative thoughts will soon disappear off your radar screen if you just leave them alone. The more attention you give to your negative thoughts, the more your anxiety will grow out of those thoughts. What most people do is focus on the negative thoughts and hit the replay button over and over (Why did I say that? Why didn’t my husband fix that? What happened yesterday at work is not my fault!, and such mind self torturing thoughts)
That is why starting the morning with a jog or going to church or meditating or praying or doing Yoga or Tai Chi can be such a powerful tool. It starts the day at ground zero, and allows your brain to relax to face the day’s challenges. If you ignore this, the untrained mind can get away from you, like a wild elephant, trampling all over your day. Don’t live in the past, if you do, mostly you will suffer every present moment which comes.
For example, try this exercise too see how powerful negative thinking can be. Think about something peaceful, maybe a feeling from your childhood, and feel how soft and gentle your soul is. Now, purposefully fill your feelings with concerns, regrets, worries, and then notice how your mood changes for the worse. You are already creating avalanches of sadness and pain, just by swinging your mood in one direction. Train your mind, stop your mind from spinning out of control. Simply rise into awareness.
Again try another exercise. Pretend you are arguing with your dear friend about something trivial in the car as you are driving down the road. Suddenly, imagine there is a car accident and your friend is terribly hurt. Then notice all the negative thoughts and feelings you had about him or her changes and shifts to helping him or her in the dire circumstance.
What has really changed to make your relationship with your friend change? Your focus has changed. Thereby, your love and caring about him/her has returned. Ask yourself in such a situation if you want to be “Right”, or be content. Choose contentment.
