Your mind can rehash the past in endless ridiculous ways, like a dog chasing its tail or a car circling with the wheel turned all the way to the left, recklessly breaking all that is in its path. And rehashing the past does more harm in that it leaves deeper and deeper scars which take a long long time to heal. But to be in the present, your mind has to be still. There is no place for the mind to move around aimlessly. You are simply here…now. Remember that the spiritual dimension starts only when your thoughts stop moving around. If you are thinking, you are not in the present, you are moving into the past or the future.
For example, you are watching a beautiful sunset. See all the colors in the sky, feel the cool breeze against your face. Are you thinking about anything except the magnificent beauty all around you? No, of course not. You cannot be thinking. You just sit, watch, and observe. When you are in a deep presence, you BECOME the sunset. You can think you are ONE with the sunset. You are penetrating into the waves of light. In a way, you are BECOMING energy itself. The intensity is deep and very spiritual. A new dimension will show itself. The new dimension is also known as ” present awareness”.
When you reach deep depths of prayer and meditation, a new knowingness arises. A stillness. You stop asking yourself questions related to the question, “Why?” Instead of asking why you do something, you merely just “do” because you enjoy. It is like planting seeds in the garden, and then waiting for the flowers to bloom. There is no goal. Endeavor to transcend goals. You set a vague virtuous aim, but you refrain from being attached to outcomes. Again, a key to achieving lasting, enduring happiness is to refrain from being attached to outcomes.
This is a difficult notion to embrace, but you must realize that nobody has any control over their futures or any future event. If you are doing the right thing and doing good now, in the present, then you need not fret over anything that happens in the future, good or bad, because you know you are doing the best you can in the now, which is the only thing you have any control over anyhow.
