You are more than a set of nerves that respond to electrical stimuli. Don’t react… respond. Reaction involves your past and fears of the future, response involves the present moment. That is why it is so easy to manipulate someone who is not awakened. If you are upset, the person you are facing will be upset so quickly. If you smile, the person across from you will smile. This is how 99 percent of society functions, on simple reactions off of each other. But an enlightened awakened person is harder to predict because he is living in the present moment. Because each moment is new, and thus not enslaved to previous past issues and he realizes that in a moment, everything could have changed.
Unconscious people can be predicted and managed because you can make them say things, do things, feel things they never wanted to do or say, because they simply react, based on their past. If you react simply due to the past, then there really is no spontaneous feelings at all. You are dominated completely by the past and because of the past you cannot even begin to see the present. Your eyes are blocked by the smoke of the past. A knowledgable educated person is usually the most mechanical of all. And thus he reacts based solely on the experiences of his “educated” past. Don’t be merely a machine. You are more than a machine.
For example, if someone makes you feel bad, you may react and get angry. If that same person compliments you and makes you feel great, then you take in the words of praise in a similar way. You are therefore not your own master at all. Anyone, big or small, smart or dumb, can say something hurtful and you will react in a rage, violently, annoyed, upset. And then it follows that that same anyone can praise you too, and you will thereby react in kind, all proud and mighty. The level of reaction will be proportional to the amount of praise and/or insults.
There is an interesting story about an awakened Buddha and some villagers. Basically, they were hurling insults at Buddha and he did not respond to them. He stated, “If someone tries to give you a gift, and you do not accept the gift, then whose gift is it?” Thus a man like Buddha, or Christ, or Mohammed, acts fully but in the moment, out of his soft consciousness. Just by watching, observing, meditating, the mind acts as a mirror to the world. It just sits but catches no impression. It only reflects perfectly and stays totally empty. Learn to sit silently, and become like a mirror. If you are quiet, you function moment to moment and reflect life outward, peacefully, quietly. You thus will not hold an album full of old photos in your head. The eyes of your mirror will have clear vision, and you will see in a genuine light.
A different history needs to be written for humanity. History books are filled with violence and discontent. So is the news. Turn OFF that news! Watch your news and read your history books. Don’t watch TMZ.com, Foxnews.com, AOL.com, or CNN.com on your computer. It is only filled with violence and war and crimes. Real history should consist of Buddhas, Christs, Moseses, Lao Tzus. If you kill someone on the streets, you will be interviewed and on the evening news. But if you help a distressed motorist in the summer heat with water and a ride to the gas station, no mention of that deed will be noticed. It will be forgotten.
