A lot of people think the answer is to have more energy to search for happiness, joining a gym or something like that. But having a stronger body really makes no real difference. With more energy, what will you do? Having more energy to plow into your unhappiness? If you have more power, what will you do with it? Exercise more power to become unhappy? If you have more money, what are you going to do with it? Someone like Jesus and Buddha were real true seekers, they went to the ends of the world to find happiness. But they learned that the striving and never arriving was really a search all in vain. Most average people stop searching along the way and give up.
But someone like Buddha went all the way to the end of his search, and then discovered that all his searching is a bunch of nonsense. So he dropped all his searching. He dropped his material search, and then he even dropped his spiritual search. He totally got rid of all his desire, and then his moment of enlightenment came. All he was searching for was in front of him but he was searching somewhere else. Just like the farmer with the candle looking all night for a flame to light his fireplace.
Another story is about how a man dropped his keys in his bedroom, which had no lights. So he went outside under the street lights and began looking for his keys. Then his neighbor saw this and came out to help him search. After awhile, after not finding the keys, the neighbor asked him, “Just where did you drop your keys?” And the man answered, “In my bedroom”. The neighbor cried out, “Well then, why are you looking for the keys out here?” And so the man answered, “It is completely dark inside my bedroom, so how the heck do you expect me to find the keys in there?” Don’t be that man.
