For example, if you hold a rigid model in your mind that you are say a rich man of power, and then change comes and you are no longer in power or rich, then where is your self now? If you hold onto it with rigidity, and you are poor, then where will your happiness be? Your happiness was so identified with power and money, and so when it is gone, who are you? Aren’t you more than just money and power? Aren’t you a soul that is part of the universe that emanates and radiates love, kindness, and compassion? Don’t be rigid. You must be flexible, and put your hopes onto things that are positive. Two of the central themes you should embrace is the idea of “dependent arising” and that of love and compassion. If you meditate on these long enough, you will move your mind higher and higher, so that the common storms of life will not sway you as much as it would sway others. Whenever you feel suffering come along, try to understand what it is inside you that is receiving the suffering and digesting it.
Be like a palm tree that is so flexible that not even a tornado or hurricane can break it. Bend when the winds of life come. Don’t be so rigid. Then you will surely break. Your ability to achieve a state of harmony and grace is directly proportional to your flexibility.
For example, in high school, I learned an important point about the idea of receptors and digestion in the stomach. Basically, the stomach digests your food and absorbs the nutrients, through your intestinal tract. But did you ever wonder why some food gets absorbed and other stuff you put into your mouth does not? For example, if you swallow chewing gum, or small pieces of plastic, you will find that it will pass through your body and into the stool without being digested and absorbed into your body. The reason why is because there are no enzymes and receptors to break down the gum and plastic into something that your body will absorb.
Thus, undesirable materials are often not absorbed into your body and your bloodstream and liver and other organs will never see the harmful elements. But what if your body suddenly produced receptors to absorb and digest pieces of gum and you swallow a bunch of it? Then what? Your body will get very sick! Do you see the analogy? Try not to absorb such harmful substances in your body. If you build receptors to digest hate, anger, jealousy, rage, envy into your soul-body, then your soul-bloodstream will carry an enormous amount of poison inside it. You will become sick to death from everything. Try to build and nourish receptors in your soul-body that will digest and fit with wonderful positive things like love, kindness, compassion, trust, integrity, joy, peace, and so on. Reject the receptors that will introduce poisonous substances into your soul-body.
