The very notion that you are separate from others is hell. Even Albert Einstein once wrote that the greatest illusion is the a person’s notion of separateness from others. If you drop and reject your ego in uncomfortable situations, you will find that suddenly all your unhappiness will disappear, and your sense of competition will also disappear. After all, how can you run a race against yourself? How can you fight yourself and win? It is a complete paradox to assume that you can “win” a fight with yourself. Even if you win, you lose. Does it make any sense to start a fight with yourself and punch yourself in your own face? That is what you are doing when you decide to start a fight with someone else. What you are really doing is starting a fight with yourself.
Once you really drop your ego, your inner hell will be destroyed by the light of loving and kind consciousness–which is heaven. Your inner conflicts will be gone, you will no longer grit your teeth with tension. In the example of traffic, if you chose the high rode, and yielded, and let the dangerous driver in, no angry thought would have grabbed any foothold onto you. Again, your own ego is really a disease that Society has infected you with. Your Ego causes you so much pain. It is like a load of unnecessary baggage that you are bringing along on a trip to Europe.
Joke time: You can always tell an egotitst by the faraway look in his eye when the conversation goes off him.
When you drop your ego, suddenly everything is so beautiful, the streets and boulevards are so amenable and twinkle in the sun. But if you embrace your ego, you cannot walk because you are burdened and groaning in pain…because of your ego. Have you ever felt your stomach if you never had a stomach ache? Of course not. If your stomach is not aching (because of hunger or because of indigestion…or gulp.. cancer) then you cannot feel it at all. It is like you don’t even have a stomach. It is only when your stomach hurts that you realize that you have a stomach at all.
Similarly, if you have no ego, then you cannot feel any pain. A little baby inside his mother’s womb has no body even, because his body is not hurting him. The older man really possesses a body like a giant, because things hurt and he can feel everything. Again, if you have no self, no ego, then how can you ever feel offended by what someone says to you? Say someone calls you a chink and you are Asian. Say someone called you by the “n” word, if you are African American. The degree of anger with which you erupt back shows how big your ego is and how much you identify with it.
If you are so offended because of a racial slur, then what does it say about you? It says a lot. It means that you yourself have a rather lowly opinion of yourself. Aren’t you more than your skin color? Aren’t you more than that?? If you are so unattacted and enlightened that you cannot even identify with such an insult, then how can they affect you? How can they trigger an angry response? If you are unattached, there can be no response. Their hate and racial slur will pass right through you.
Joke time (a bit lurid, I’m sorry)
“What does a man have that gets bigger when you stroke it?”
Answer: His ego.
Joke Blcok #2 (about ego)
I know a friend who is so egotistical, he collects his own autographs. His idea of being unfaithful is to turn away from his bathroom mirror. Also, when he has a sexual climax, he screams his own name. He also never takes a hot shower because it clouds the mirror. Finally, when I asked him what his new girlfriend thinks of him, he replied, “She thinks I’m wonderful and terrific.” Then when I asked him what is the best thing he likes about her, he replied, “That she thinks I’m wonderful and terrific.”
