If you start to compare, you will immediately start imitating. If you start comparing yourself with people with money, then you will start moving in the same goals. If you start comparing yourself with the smartest kids in the class, then you’ll start studying all the time, and thinking of nothing else. You won’t stop to enjoy your life, all you will do is start to become obsessed with gathering up trivial facts and doing ridiculous things like spelling bees where you repeat words that nobody has used for 1000 years and no one in their right mind will use for another 1000 years. All you will become is a parrot, endlessly copying off the works and moves of others. That is no way at all to live. I urge you to drop comparison completely in your own life if you would like to enjoy any semblance of peace.
Know that you are totally unique, like a snowflake in a giant snowfall. You are perfect just the way you are. There is no one else in the world like you and there will never again be someone like you. This is not to say you are better than anyone else. Rather, you were created in a way that God and the universe wanted. Just let others be, and just gently drop into your own being. Just love and enjoy how you really bring your own joy into the world.
If you start to compare, comparsion brings in the past and the future all at once and it brings you to see people who have “more” than you. It prevents you from living in the moment, from enjoying what is going on right now. Comparison always comes from the ego. You just spend your time thinking about how to get ahead of the person next to you. You also just spend your time thinking about why you let some people even get ahead of you in the first place. And you spend your waking moments regretting how you stumbled last week and that prevented you from getting ahead. You become like a runner on a sprint track just thinking about how he lost the race two days ago because he tripped on the hurdle bar. Being like the runner, you replay that moment over and over again like a broken record. Then you just worry how you are going to get enough points to win the race tomorrow.
